Below is a copy of my Philosophy of Education.  I have provided a link to the document in Google Docs, as well as copy and pasted it in this entry for you to read at your convenience.

Philosophy of Education

My teaching philosophy is simple and straightforward.  I aim to make learning an engaging and enjoyable experience for every one of my students.  To accomplish this, I will utilize various teaching techniques in my classroom, as well as real world experience to connect content with everyday life.  It is my goal that my students become well-educated citizens in this ever-changing global society. I will also work diligently to teach them the core values of our founding fathers.  It is essential to compare historical events of the past with current happenings; this will allow the students to make good decisions about their future.

Student success is dependent upon strong lesson plans within different models of instruction; approaching learning from all the multiple intelligences; and varying teaching strategies to engage an array of learning styles.   All of the above will permit me to address the needs of all learners.

I believe that students learn best when they are able to learn from each other.  I try to incorporate teamwork amongst students by structuring appropriate cooperative learning activities.   Student-centered cooperative learning activities permit students to be in charge of their own learning, and gives them the chance to create new learning connections by working with classmates.  The use of cooperative learning strategies also allows for students to be challenged in new ways with topics that may be initially too difficult; the perspectives brought about by others in their team will increase comprehension.

Teamwork is an important ingredient when working with everyone in the school community, including other teachers, administrators, and parents. Teamwork denotes cooperation and collaboration--postures used in planning and decision-making that can only enhance the academic experience for all students. During my student teaching internship, I always enjoyed sharing new ways to teach History/Social Studies-- in return, fellow teachers began to do the same.

I bring an enthusiastic, energetic, upbeat, positive feeling to the classroom.  I want students to feel comfortable when they walk into my classroom, and feel safe enough to come to me about anything that may be happening in their lives.  I work hard to create a respectful rapport with my students, and to maintain that respect both in and out of the classroom.  This respect translates to cooperation, good student behavior, and effective classroom management.

In conclusion, I believe students should be challenged and encouraged by teachers who truly care about them. When students know that a teacher sincerely cares about their happiness, success, and general welfare, learning will ensue.
